Spanish Cardinals Support Canonisation

Spanish Cardinals Support Canonisation of Queen IsabelHis Eminence Antonio Cañizares, Primate of Spain and Cardinal Archbishop of Toledo, presided at a Mass in thanksgiving for Isabel the Catholic and the Hispanic World. During his homily he showed strong support for Isabel’s canonization stating, “May we in a brief period of time see Isabel proclaimed blessed.”

Cardinal Cañizares also spoke of Isabel’s passion for the evangelization of America “which was, for the Queen the most basic reason” for the voyages of discovery. Indeed it was from his own Archdiocese of Toledo that Queen Isabel received Christopher Columbus and authorized him to embark on his mission.

During the homily, in October 2006, the Cardinal highlighted the fact that thanks to Isabel and her vision “the Hispanic World today makes up more than half of the faithful of the Catholic Church” and that “during her reign what is now known as Spain was formed”.

And on 3rd December 2006, His Eminence Antonio Maria Ruoco Varela, Cardinal Archbishop of Madrid, gave a conference on “Isabel the Catholic and Human Rights” in the Cathedral of Valladolid. The Cardinal pointed out the need to keep spreading the truth about the Queen so that the historical facts which surround her person and reign could help her Cause for Canonization go forward, which the Cardinal stated is in its last stage.

The Cardinal’s talk followed solemn vespers, presided over by His Excellency Braulio Rodriguez Plaza, Archbishop of Valladolid, at a joint event during Advent to “Prepare for the Birth of the Lord, with the Servant of God Isabel of Castile”.
